Joseph Had a Little Overcoat by Simms Taback

National Children's Book Week
Book 4:  Joseph Had a Little Overcoat by Simms Taback
 Activity 1:  Sort clothes
Materials:  different clothes (you could use some of the ones mentioned in the book)
Description:  Give your toddler a big pile of clothes.  Have your little one sort all the clothes, putting all the shirts in a pile, all the shorts in a pile etc.  You could also give your toddler three different pieces and clothing and have them put the clothes in order from biggest to smallest or smallest to biggest.
Skills Targeted:  teach your tot to compare and contrast, teach your tot to sort, teach your tot retell a story
 Activity 2:  Count Buttons
Materials:  Buttons
Description:  Give your toddler a pile of buttons.  Help your little one count all the buttons
Skills Targeted:  teach your tot to count, teach your tot math skills
 Activity 3:  Compare and contrast buttons by size
Materials:  three different size buttons
Description:  Give your toddler three different size buttons.  Help them put them in order from biggest to smallest then smallest to biggest.
Skills Targeted:  teach your tot to compare and contrast by size, teach your tot the opposites biggest and smallest, teach your tot math skills

I love that this project is simple and effective, not to mention that it ties in the literary counterpart. The best part is that can be done using items already plentiful in the house!
